Task 1 - Choose a TV genre.
The TV genre I have chosen is Sitcom because it explores the humourous side of television which I find very interesting. Sitcoms have become very difficult to maintain humour and ongoing jokes especially as a series goes on writers and producers are finding it harder to write about something they haven't already talked about or the fact that what they find funny may not be as humourous to the audience watching at home.
Codes & Conventions of Sitcom:
Catchy Theme song - Most sitcoms have a catchy opening theme song which is important as it helps the audience identify and recognise the show.
Settings - In most sitcoms there are limited set that are used. This makes the show more recognisable as you tend to see more of the same sets in every episode.
Characters - Most sitcoms only have a few main characters who appear throughout the show and are in every episode. Usually within the characters there is an idiotic character who is amongst a group of 'normal' people. This shows the differences between their personalities. Common attributes within characters is sarcasm.
Catchphrases - Some sitcoms have a particular phrase that a character may repeat over and over in certain situations making the phrase more recognisable and can be identified with the character.
Canned Laughter - When something is done on purpose to make the audience laugh. The actions are done intentionally for humourous effect.
Relationships - A lot of sitcoms are based on the relationships people have with each other. For example Family, Friends and work colleagues.
Linear Narrative - When the show has a beginning, middle and end.
Storylines - Most storylines always come to an end after every episode.
A one liner - The one liner joke is made in one sentence normally observational to an event that has just happened.
Situation - Sometimes in sitcoms there will be a situation that the characters will face and have to overcome by the end of the episode.

Task 2 - Choose 1 or 2 programmes from your selected genre.
Task 3 - Analyse the shows.
Codes & Conventions:
Modern family meets the sitcom codes and conventions because the show follows a linear narrative, it also shows the relationships between the family members, For example Mother and Fathers, brothers, sisters and cousins. Most scenes are set within the families homes which makes the show more recognisable as we see the locations regularly and like in most sitcoms the characters will face a problem that they have to over come For example in a previous episode Phil and Claire has an argument and Gloria and Jay step in to help them resolve the situation by counselling them and encouraging them to forgive each other.
The Big Bang Theory also meets the code and conventions because the show has six main characters who all appear in every episode, very few sets are used so its easy to recognise the show just by looking at the locations.
the opening theme song is very catchy which makes it easy for the audience to identify the show. There is one main catchphrase used by one of the characters, Sheldon, for example every time he makes a joke he would wait a few seconds before saying the words "Bazinga". The show follows a linear narrative and it also shows the relationship between the group of friends who also happen to be their work colleagues and occasionally the relationships the characters have with their family. For example there are many couples within the group of friends Leonard and Penny, Sheldon and Amy, Howard and Bernadette, Raj and Emily. The relationships they have with their family differs from characters. Leonard and his mother rarely speak and are not close with each other where as Sheldon and his mother are very close to each other. Howard did not show any love or respect towards his mother and Raj tends to be quite loyal and respectful to his parents. The Big Bang Theory also uses a lot of canned laughter for humourous effect, for example making the characters do or say something silly on purpose to make the audience laugh. They occasionally use a one liner joke, for example if Sheldon was to make a mistake he would often use the word "rats" to express his annoyance. In most episodes of The Big Bang Theory the characters will face a situation, in previous episode the situation would most likely be a break up, public humiliation, or social problems within the group of friends. Of course like most sitcoms the storyline comes to an end after every episode.
Audience Profiling:
Modern Family-
The target audience for Modern Family is 12 years and over as the show does contain some sexual content but it's mostly humorous references and similar subjects. The use of profanity and certain words are said that may not be suitable for anyone under the age of 12.
The viewing habits for this programme would most likely be on TV as it is a TV show but young people might choose to watch online and the show is normally scheduled to air at 8:30 pm on the Sky 1 channel. This is the last slot before the 9pm watershed which means that this show is suitable for young viewers but not viewers younger than the age of 12 who would most likely not be staying up till 8:30 pm to see the show anyway.
The Big Bang Theory-
The target audience for The Big Bang theory is people aged 18 – 49 year olds. The Big Bang theory is scheduled to be on TV every new episode is aired Thursday at 8pm on the channel E4 or in America on the channel CBS. E4 also air back to back of previous episodes everyday from 6pm.
The viewing habit for this show is most likely on TV as it is a TV series but teens may prefer to watch the show online but adults may choose to watch on the television.
Audience Response:
Preferred: This is where the audience has to decode the message in the show, which is what the producer wants them to do and agrees with it.
Oppositional: where the audience misunderstands the meaning or simply disagrees with it and it gets rejected.
Negotiated: Where the audience rejects, accepts or improves elements of the message in previously held views.
Modern Family-
The encoded messages within Modern Family is that the family unit is important and that a modern family comes in all shapes and sizes.
In the situation where Cameron and Mitchell are about to get married, both of their fathers weren't comfortable with their sons getting married to each other but ended up supporting them and walking them down the aisle. The audience response for this scene would be negotiated because some people still believe gay marriage is wrong and others support it.
The Big Bang Theory-
The encoded message within The Big Bang Theory is that even though you may be a nerdy guy it doesn’t mean you can't get the girls. Friendship and loyalty is another message within the show because they will defend each other and look out for each other but also joke around with them.
In the situation where they make fun of Raj's accent the audience response would most likely be oppositional because it could make the audience feel uncomfortable if they think that the characters are being racist but they could also find it humourous because of the way the character reacts about it.
In a previous episode of The Big Bang Theory there was a situation when the six characters were having a disagreement about a multiple things which lead to them splitting into two groups to watch their favourite show. But when Howard has an allergic reaction they all come together to help him out. The audience response for this situation could be preferred because they agree with the way the group of friends support eachother when they need it.
Narrative Analysis:
Modern family and The Big Bang Theory both have the multi strand, linear and series narrative. For example Modern Family is multi strand because normally each family in the show has their own story that usually link up at the end with a family gathering. On The Big Bang Theory sometimes each couple will have a different story.
Both shows also has a linear narrative most of the time because each show has a main story which normally has a conclusion at the end. Occasionally The Big Bang Theory will be nonlinear as they have used flashbacks in previous episodes while a character explains a story.
These shows are both TV series in that they have more than one episode but the stories don’t necessarily continue into another episode.
Themes and Political or Social issues:
Modern Family -
When the show first started in the United States it was illegal for people of the same sex to marry each other. This meant that in the show the gay couple Cameron and Mitchell were not able to get married due to the law but as the year went on Gay marriage was finally legalized in most US states which also changed in the programmed and Camera and Mitchell could get married at last. This was a political issue because it was the US government who decided to legalize same sex marriage.
The programme has dealt with social issues such as adoption, for example the gay couple in the family decide to start a family and adopt a child from Vietnam. This could spark a debate on whether it's right for gay people to adopt as some people have very strong and opinionated views on this topic. The adoption also brings up the issue of whether its right to adopt and a child from another country and bring them into the United States but also because the child comes from a completely different social background. People's opinions may differ from believing that gay people should not be allowed to raise a child because the child might get bullied as they grow up for not having a mum or dad, but other people may say that It's great that gay couples want to adopt because everyone deserves a family and gay people can do a just as good job as parents as a straight couple could.
Another social issue shown in Modern Family was that Jay married Gloria, a pretty woman from Columbia who is many years younger than him. This could spark a debate on whether its right to marry a woman who is much younger and the legal issues behind it but because she is a young beautiful woman it makes you think " why would she marry an older man?" This could form a debate on many opinions. Jay is quite a wealthy man, maybe she married him for the money or maybe she married him so she could stay in the country or Gloria might have just married him because she fell in love.
The themes explored in Modern Family is the relationships between everyone in the family, the situations they face, the type of lifestyle each family lives and the connections between all the families.
The Big Bang Theory-
A social issue that was faced in The Big Bang Theory was the issue of Raj being deported to India because his research ran into a dead end and his visa only worked if he was employed at the university where he worked. So to save himself from being deported he had to get himself another job, working alongside Dr Sheldon Cooper. This could spark a debate on whether people believe that foreigners should be sent back to their own country or be allowed to stay and live in another.
Another social issue that was shown was the fact that within the group of friends they all seem to joke about Raj's Indian accent. This social issue shows a bit of racism towards the character but can also be seen as friendly banter as the way it's scripted doesn’t make it seem like the characters were intending to offend him. People could debate and argue about this issue, some may say the characters were being racist toward Raj but others would see it as a joke because Raj was never offended and always had a comeback.
The themes they explored were mostly science as all of the main characters are scientists, friendships between one another as some characters have closer bonds with others. For example Raj and Howard are best friends and Sheldon and Leonard are roommates. The theme of relationships were also explored because at first the characters were nerdy scientist who couldn’t get girls but now as we are moving onto the tenth season soon we see the characters all in happy relationships.

Representation:
Modern Family - Cameron Tucker "Cam" is a soccer coach and PE teacher. He is in a gay marriage with his partner Mitchell and is the adoptive father of Lily. Cameron is quite a bossy yet caring character. This character has been represented as a stereotypical gay guy, for example he has the traits of being over emotional, uses flouncy hand gestures, sometimes it shows in his dialogue and usually the stereotypical male gay character comes across as quite feminine which is how Cameron's personality is projected to the audience. However his partner, Mitchell is a completely different character and is nothing like the stereotypical gay character that his husband is set out to be.
I think quite a few gay men could relate to Cam's character as they may share the same traits and interests. They could also relate to the relationships that Cam has with his family, husband and daughter. A lot of gay couples could relate to the adoption of a child as well because more and more gay couples these days are thinking about adoption or have adopted a child to start a family with their significant other.
Alex Dunphy is a student. She lives with her mother, Claire, her father, Phil and her brother and sister, Luke and Hayley. Alex is quite a smart, nerdy and sarcastic character who cares greatly about her education and getting good grades, she will stop at nothing to be the best in her class and also the whole school. Alex tends to be quite a sarcastic person towards other people, her sarcasm could be a way of mocking others intelligence. Her character shows a lot of focus and determination to reach her goals but because she is more interested in her education, Alex doesn’t really have a social life.
Some Teens may possibly relate to this character if they spend a lot of their time doing school work or wanting to achieve the best they can, they can understand the determination and the thoughts going through the characters brain. Some teens could relate to the character because she can't maintain a social life, like most teenager they spend their time inside on the internet instead of going out and socializing with others.
The Big Bang Theory-
Raj Koothrappali is an Astrophysicist. Indian male, shy, can't talk to women unless he has consumed alcohol, quite a nerdy character who is into comic books and star wars, sometimes outcasted from his group of friends. Raj is eventually able to talk to women without the help of alcohol and manages to get a girlfriend. This character has been represented as the stereotypical cocky yet lovable Indian guy like in most sitcoms.
People can relate to Raj because we have all been in a situation where we get nervous to talk to the opposite sex and most people know what it feels like to be different and sometimes outcasted from a group of friends.
From the development of this character we learn that as the show goes on the character gets more confident to the point where he can actually talk to girls and his personality starts to change when he gets a girlfriend.
Penny was a part time waitress and aspiring actress but after quitting her job and giving up on her dream as an actress, she now works as a pharmaceutical sales assistant. Stereotypical pretty blonde girl, not very smart but still manages to get the men, although her character does have some of those tomboy traits that most stereotypical blondes don't have. Penny is a caring and positive person who finally settled down and married Leonard Hofstadter an experimental physicist who still lives with his roommate. Penny is often mocked by Sheldon (Leonard's roommate) for being dumb and stupid but after living across the hall from them and spending a lot her time in their company she had learnt a few things.
I don't think a lot of people can relate to Penny unless the person is a blonde female. On the other hand some people could relate to the way she is treated because she is attractive she is more popular but people could also relate to the mockery that she receives about her intelligence which is what the stereotypical blonde is perceived to be, pretty but also dumb, Hence the phrase 'dumb blonde'.
From the development of this character we learn that Penny's intelligence starts to grow and she becomes less like the stereotypical dumb blonde as she manages to get herself a high paying job as a Pharmaceutical sales assistant.
Technical Aspects:
Modern Family -
Techniques used to build the narrative of the show are that they occasionally have the characters sitting in front of the camera talking, almost like they have been asked questions and they are answering them or talking directly to the audience. This show is a mockumentary, (A documentary on three families all related and the everyday things that go on in their lives is documented but in a humorous way.) This makes the show unique as most sitcoms don't usually have the characters talking to the camera. This way of filming makes the show seem more realistic and the storylines are believable. You also believe that the families are real and you don't notice that they are acting because they are aware of the camera in the show.
The Big Bang Theory-
The techniques use to develop and build a story line in The Big Bang Theory are in every episode they will have a scene where the characters will walk up the stair way talking about something until they get to the apartment.
Another technique used in the show when they are changing scenes the transition would have a 3d graphic of the science atom symbol slide into the screen and slide out to a different scene in the show. This technique is unique to the show because the symbol is to do with science and so is the show.
